ReplyDeleteMichael, next door, has a B.A. in theater makeup and now & then gets work on the movies. The beep of his horn as he set his truck alarm a few minutes ago woke me. (Should i be looking frwrd to being *completely* deaf?)
It reminded me of the hours a coder I once knew kept....or was subjected to. He helped maintain the mainframe that ran the (one of?) electrical generationing stations for Cleveland, Ohio. He'd be called in at all hours of the day or night. He said the room was so warm he worked in zorris and naught else.
How did your coding days/nights compare?
I started my coding in 8bit machine language on punched paper tape, coding sampling, decision trees, and loops, including the deadend loops we called death spirals. When a machine got stuck in one of those you read off the address on in binary, or if you were lucky, on neon-tube number-displays, then looked up that address in a paper notebook to find out what logic-branch got stuck.
ReplyDeleteI did progress from there through several other higher languages as they were devoloped, many of which are dead now and none of which I am even partially fluent in anymore.
