She Flew Back

Over the years we talked about going hither & yon always limited by our aversion to flight. Lo & behold she had her nose glued to the window both coming and going. No problem!

Somewhere West of Albuquerque

I get claustrophobic.

  1. Hither & yon are over-rated (my personal experiance with the food in France was that it sucked! And this from a guy that had been eating English fare for a couple of weeks before ending up behind some French utensils), especially if you have to get in one of those odorous flying tubes to get there.

    1. Greg, I swear to god, every time you open your mouth you drop another bombshell of enigma.

So! Just WHEN were you in England?!?! And WHAT enticed you to France?!? And I can't beLIEVE you turned your nose up at the pastries! I mean, I STUDIED Julia Child's French cooking book (never got around to making anything but did adopt some tips) and both she and M.F.K. Fisher and Peter Mayle waxed so effusively over French cuisine I swear if it wasn't that Kristen said she wouldn't fly I probably would've gone.

So!! Can you be a bit more specific (erudite) than "it sucked!" LOL!!!

In my youth I flew blithely to Japan and back. Then to Germany and made several trips along the way with no problem. But something happened that triggered an attach as we (Michelle & gallery staff) were returning from the Navy Pier art exhibit in Chicago in 1998. I had a terrible attack in mid flight of claustrophobia. Clear skies, no turbulence it just hit me. I took everything anyone had hidden in their wallets or purses, and ran backwards against the moving sidewalk to activate it all before the next plane took off. I seriously considered taking the bus from St. Louis where we were changing planes. I sort of attribute it to my years as a mechanic, but I don't know. In any case the mere though of climbing into one of them makes my palms sweat and starts heart palpitations. Almost as bad as considering bypass sirgery. 🥸

    2. OK, the answer to your questions is more post-like than comment-capable - so we'll see what comes up in the blog in the future.

  2. Planes have become more and more claustrophobic, especially the dreaded middle seat. Glad she got the window.

  3. This was the first time she's flown in decades. Over the last eight years that we've been together she swore she'd never fly anywhere. Then this workshop opened up in Abiquiu and it was just too inconvenient to drive. As much as she doesn't want to admit it, age is having its way and driving has become exhausting. I was really happy to see that she enjoyed it.
